Synapse

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011739

A specialized junction between two nerve cells, or between a nerve cell and an effector cell, that allows for the transmission of electrical or chemical signals. It consists of a presynaptic terminal, a synaptic cleft, and a postsynaptic membrane. Neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft to convey signals across this gap.
