Synapsis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013628
The pairing of homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis, forming a bivalent structure. This intimate association allows for the precise alignment of genetic material, facilitating genetic recombination through crossing over. The process is mediated by the synaptonemal complex, a protein structure that holds the homologous chromosomes together.
