Genetic recombination

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004837

The process by which genetic material is rearranged, typically by crossing over between homologous chromosomes or by independent assortment of genes. This leads to new combinations of alleles in offspring that differ from those of the parents. Recombination is a fundamental mechanism for generating genetic diversity within a species.
