Crossing over

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002717

The reciprocal exchange of genetic material between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes during the prophase I stage of meiosis. This process results in the recombination of alleles, creating new combinations of genes on the chromatids that differ from those of the parent chromosomes. The frequency of crossing over between two genes is proportional to the physical distance separating them on the chromosome, a principle used in gene mapping.
