Synaptonemal complex
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011745
A proteinaceous structure that forms between homologous chromosomes during the pachytene stage of prophase I in meiosis. It mediates synapsis, the pairing of homologous chromosomes, and is thought to facilitate the process of chromosomal crossover, or recombination. This tripartite structure consists of two parallel lateral elements, each associated with a homologous chromosome, and a central element that connects them.
