Recombination

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010019

A process in which DNA molecules are broken and rejoined so that segments from different molecules, or from distant sites on one molecule, end up combined in new arrangements. It underlies crossing over between homologous chromosomes in meiosis and the repair of some DNA breaks. Homologous recombination exchanges closely matching sequences, whereas site-specific recombination acts at short defined target sequences, as in the Cre-loxP system.
