V(D)J recombination

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012532

A somatic recombination process that randomly assembles gene segments encoding the variable regions of T cell receptors and immunoglobulins. This genetic rearrangement occurs in developing lymphocytes, specifically B and T cells, to generate a vast repertoire of antigen-binding specificities. The process involves variable (V), diversity (D), and joining (J) gene segments.
