Gene rearrangement
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004813
A cellular process that alters the sequence of DNA by cutting, shuffling, and joining gene segments to create new genetic combinations. This mechanism is a hallmark of the adaptive immune system, where it generates the vast diversity of antigen receptors on B and T lymphocytes. The process involves specific enzymes, such as RAG recombinases, that recognize and splice V (variable), D (diversity), and J (joining) gene segments.
