Combinatorial diversity

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002267

The vast repertoire of antigen receptors generated by the somatic recombination of a limited number of gene segments. During lymphocyte development, different variable (V), diversity (D), and joining (J) gene segments are randomly selected and joined together to form the variable region of an antigen receptor chain. This process, combined with junctional diversity, results in billions of unique T-cell and B-cell receptors from a few hundred available gene segments.
