Reuptake
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010310
The process by which neurotransmitters are actively transported from the synaptic cleft back into the presynaptic neuron or surrounding glial cells. This mechanism terminates the signaling action of the neurotransmitter and allows for its recycling or degradation. Specific transporter proteins are responsible for mediating this process for different neurotransmitters.
