Reverse genetics

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010311

An experimental approach that begins with a known gene sequence and then investigates its function by altering the gene and observing the resulting phenotypic changes. This method contrasts with forward genetics, which starts with a phenotype and seeks to identify the underlying gene. Techniques like gene knockout or RNA interference are commonly used in reverse genetics.
