Reverse geometry
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010312
A design for a double-focusing mass spectrometer in which the magnetic sector is placed before the electrostatic energy analyzer along the ion flight path. In this configuration, ions are first separated according to their mass-to-charge ratio by the magnetic field, and then the resulting ion beam is focused according to its kinetic energy by the electrostatic field. This arrangement is particularly effective for mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy spectrometry (MIKES) and for studying the products of metastable ion decay.
