Mattauch-Herzog geometry
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007037
A double-focusing arrangement for a mass spectrograph in which ions first pass through a radial electric field that deflects them through about 31.8 degrees, π/(4√2) radians, and then through a magnetic field that deflects them through 90 degrees. The geometry brings ions of all masses to a focus along a single plane, so a photographic plate or array detector records the whole spectrum at once. It is the classic geometry of spark-source mass spectrographs.
