Neurotransmission
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013331
The process of transferring a signal from one neuron to another across a synapse, or from a neuron to a target effector cell like a muscle or gland cell. This transfer is accomplished by the release of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters from the presynaptic terminal, which then bind to receptors on the postsynaptic cell. Many neurotoxicants exert their effects by interfering with specific steps of neurotransmission, such as neurotransmitter synthesis, release, or receptor binding.
