Neurotrophin

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007902

A family of proteins that function as growth factors, promoting the survival, development, and function of neurons in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. They bind to specific tyrosine kinase receptors on the surface of neurons, initiating signaling cascades that regulate neuronal differentiation and plasticity. Key members of this family in vertebrates include nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3).
