Voltage-activated channel

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012607

An ion channel protein embedded in a cell membrane that opens or closes in response to changes in the membrane potential. These channels are selectively permeable to specific ions, such as sodium, potassium, or calcium, and their conformational change allows for rapid ion flux across the membrane. The action potential in neurons is a classic example of a process mediated by the sequential opening and closing of voltage-activated sodium and potassium channels.
