Voltage-gated ion channel
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012608
A transmembrane protein that forms a pore allowing specific ions to pass through the cell membrane, with its opening and closing controlled by changes in the membrane potential. These channels are responsible for generating and propagating electrical signals in excitable cells, such as neurons and muscle cells. They are distinct from ligand-gated ion channels, which respond to chemical signals.
