Resting potential

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010274

The electrical potential difference across the plasma membrane of an excitable cell when it is not actively transmitting an impulse. This potential is maintained by the differential distribution of ions, primarily potassium and sodium, across the membrane, mediated by ion channels and pumps. The resting potential is typically negative inside the cell, ranging from -60 to -90 millivolts.
