Repolarization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010198
The process by which the membrane potential of an excitable cell, such as a neuron or muscle cell, returns to its resting negative state after depolarization. This occurs due to the efflux of potassium ions out of the cell, restoring the electrochemical gradient across the membrane. Repolarization is a necessary step for the cell to be ready to generate another action potential.
