Depolarization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003023
A decrease in the absolute value of a cell's membrane potential, making the inside of the cell less negative relative to the outside. This change in potential is typically caused by the influx of positive ions, such as sodium, into the cell. Depolarization is a fundamental step in the generation of action potentials in excitable cells like neurons and muscle cells.
