Depolarization ratio
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003025
The ratio of the intensity of Raman scattered light polarized perpendicular to the incident polarization to the intensity of Raman scattered light polarized parallel to the incident polarization. This value provides information about the symmetry of the vibrational mode responsible for the scattering. For totally symmetric vibrations, the depolarization ratio is typically less than 0.75, while for non-totally symmetric vibrations, it approaches 0.75.
