Depolarized Raman band

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003026

A band in a Raman spectrum whose intensity is largely independent of the polarization of the scattered light relative to the incident light. Such bands are characteristic of non-totally symmetric molecular vibrations. The degree of depolarization is quantified by the depolarization ratio, which for a depolarized band has a value of 0.75 when using linearly polarized incident light.
