Depolymerase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003027

An enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of a polymer into its constituent monomers or smaller oligomers. These enzymes achieve this by cleaving the chemical bonds that link the monomer units together. Depolymerases are specific to the type of polymer they act upon, such as cellulase for cellulose or amylase for starch.
