Monomer

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013304

A molecule that can undergo polymerization, thereby contributing constitutional units to the structure of a macromolecule. Monomers are typically small molecules with at least one functional group capable of forming covalent bonds with other monomer molecules. Examples include ethylene, which polymerizes to polyethylene, and styrene, which forms polystyrene.
