Monomer
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002420
A small molecule that can chemically bond with other identical or different monomers to form a larger polymer chain. In drilling fluids, monomers are the building blocks for synthetic polymers used as viscosifiers, fluid loss additives, and shale inhibitors. Examples include acrylamide and acrylic acid, which polymerize to create polyacrylamides and polyacrylates.
