Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000113

A copolymer built from the sulfonated monomer 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, usually with acrylamide, used as an additive in high-temperature, high-salinity water-based muds. The sulfonate groups keep it anionic, water-soluble, and stable in brines where many polymers precipitate or degrade. It is mainly used to control fluid loss and stabilize rheology, and the same monomer also goes into cement fluid loss additives.
