Acrylamide acrylate polymer
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000052
A copolymer of acrylamide and acrylate, usually sold as partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PHPA), added to water-based mud to coat shale cuttings and borehole walls, which slows hydration and dispersion of reactive clays. It also raises the yield of low-bentonite muds as a clay extender and flocculates fine solids in clear-water drilling. The share of acrylate groups and the molecular weight set its tolerance to salt and temperature, and low-molecular-weight grades act as deflocculants instead.
