Acrylate polymer

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000053

A synthetic polymer used as a deflocculant or thinner in water-based drilling fluids, particularly in high-temperature environments. These low-molecular-weight polymers attach to the edges of clay particles, neutralizing the positive charges that cause them to clump together, thereby reducing the fluid's viscosity and gel strengths. Unlike lignosulfonates, acrylate polymers are effective at temperatures above 300°F (150°C) and do not require chromium, making them an environmentally preferred option for deep, hot wells.
