Sodium acid pyrophosphate
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003488
A chemical additive used as a deflocculant in drilling fluids to reduce viscosity and gel strength. It works by neutralizing positive charges on the edges of clay platelets, causing them to repel each other and disperse. Sodium acid pyrophosphate (SAPP) is particularly effective for treating cement contamination or other sources of high calcium content in water-based muds, and it performs best in a pH range of 7 to 9.5.
