Pyrophosphate
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003012
A chemical compound used as a deflocculant or dispersant in water-based drilling fluids to reduce viscosity and gel strength. It works by adsorbing onto clay particles, neutralizing their positive charges and causing them to repel each other. Sodium acid pyrophosphate (SAPP) is a common example, particularly effective in freshwater muds.
