Bichromate salt
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000335
A chromium-based chemical compound, such as sodium dichromate, formerly used as a deflocculant and high-temperature stabilizer in certain water-based drilling fluids. It functioned by neutralizing positive charges on clay platelet edges, reducing viscosity and gel strengths in lignosulfonate mud systems. The use of bichromate salts has been largely discontinued in modern drilling operations due to the extreme toxicity and environmental hazards associated with hexavalent chromium.
