Dichromate salt
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001060
A salt containing hexavalent chromium, such as sodium dichromate or potassium dichromate, that was added to water-based muds as a corrosion inhibitor and as a thermal stabilizer for lignite and lignosulfonate. It acts as an anodic inhibitor by forming a protective oxide film on steel. Hexavalent chromium is toxic, so such salts are now restricted in muds that are discharged to the environment.
