Dispersant

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001115

A chemical additive that deflocculates clay particles in a water-based drilling fluid, reducing viscosity and gel strengths. Dispersants work by adsorbing onto clay surfaces, imparting a negative charge that causes the particles to repel each other rather than form aggregates. Common examples include lignosulfonates, tannins, and polyphosphates, which are selected based on the mud system's chemistry and temperature.
