Polyphosphates

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002857

A class of chemical compounds used as deflocculants and thinners in freshwater-based drilling fluids to control viscosity and gel strengths. They function by adsorbing onto clay particles, increasing their negative charge and causing them to repel one another, which breaks up aggregated clay structures. Their effectiveness diminishes at temperatures above about 150°F (65°C) due to thermal reversion to orthophosphates, which can cause flocculation.
