Polysaccharide
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002858
A carbohydrate polymer built from many monosaccharide units joined by glycosidic bonds. In enhanced oil recovery, microbial polysaccharides such as xanthan gum are used as biopolymers to thicken injection water for mobility control in polymer flooding. Xanthan resists shear degradation and salinity better than partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, but it is prone to biodegradation and to plugging by microbial residue in low-permeability rock.
