Xanthan gum
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004183
A high-molecular-weight polysaccharide, produced by fermentation of sugar by Xanthomonas campestris, used as a viscosifier and suspending agent in water-based drilling fluids. Its solutions are strongly shear-thinning, with high viscosity at low shear that holds cuttings and weighting material and low viscosity at pump shear rates. It is effective at about 0.5 to 2 lb/bbl and tolerates salt, unlike bentonite, which does not yield in saltwater.
