Hectorite

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001807

A naturally occurring smectite clay mineral, similar to bentonite, used as a viscosifier and suspending agent in drilling fluids. It provides high viscosity and good thixotropic properties, particularly in freshwater systems. Hectorite is often used in specialized drilling fluid formulations where bentonite performance is limited, such as in high-temperature applications.
