Organophilic clay
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002641
A clay mineral, such as bentonite, that has been chemically treated with organic cations to make its surface oil-wetting. This modification allows the clay to swell and disperse in oil-based drilling fluids, providing viscosity and suspension properties. It is a primary viscosifier in invert emulsion muds.
