Smectite clay

A group of expandable clay minerals, such as montmorillonite, characterized by their ability to absorb water and swell significantly. These clays are a primary component of bentonite, used to build viscosity and filter cake in drilling fluids. However, their swelling can cause wellbore instability if not properly managed.
