A sticky, hydrated clay formation encountered during drilling that can adhere to drill bits and other downhole tools. This material can swell and reduce the annulus, leading to increased torque and drag, and can also cause problems with solids control equipment at the surface. It is primarily composed of smectite clays, such as montmorillonite.
