Low gravity solids
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002225
Fine, suspended particles in drilling fluid that have a specific gravity less than 2.6, primarily consisting of drilled cuttings and hydrated clay minerals. These solids can increase mud viscosity, reduce drilling rate, and contribute to filter cake buildup if their concentration is not controlled. They are typically removed from the mud system by mechanical solids control equipment.
Solid particles suspended in drilling fluid with a specific gravity below 2.6, predominantly comprising drilled rock cuttings and native clay minerals. Excessive accumulation of these solids can lead to increased mud viscosity, reduced drilling rates, and potential formation damage. Solids control equipment, such as centrifuges, is used to manage their concentration.
