High-gravity solids
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001825
Dense solid particles added to a drilling fluid to raise its density, chiefly barite (barium sulfate, specific gravity about 4.2) and hematite (about 5). They differ from low-gravity solids, the clays and drilled cuttings whose specific gravity is near 2.6, and an excess of them raises plastic viscosity and yield point. Retort solids and mud weight let an engineer split the two groups by mass balance.
