Material balance equation
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002294
A conservation relation used in mud engineering that equates the total mass, or volume, of a blended fluid to the sum of its components. It underlies calculations for raising density with barite, diluting with water or base oil, and splitting retort solids into low-gravity and high-gravity fractions. For a blend, the final density equals the volume-weighted average of the component densities when the volumes are additive.
