Mass balance
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002289
An accounting of all materials entering and leaving the circulating drilling fluid system, based on the principle of conservation of mass. This calculation tracks the volumes of mud, water, chemical additives, and drilled solids to monitor fluid properties, manage inventory, and detect downhole problems like fluid losses or influxes. A discrepancy in the mass balance indicates a gain or loss of fluid to the formation or an unrecorded surface addition.
