HGS
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001816
An abbreviation for high-gravity solids, the dense weighting materials added to a drilling fluid to raise its density, chiefly barite (specific gravity about 4.2) and hematite (about 5). They are distinguished from low-gravity solids, meaning clays and drilled cuttings with a specific gravity near 2.6. Engineers separate the two groups from retort solids and mud weight by mass balance, and a lower low-gravity share gives a lower plastic viscosity at a given density.
