Weight material
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004130
A finely ground, high-density solid added to drilling fluids to increase their specific gravity. These materials are used to counteract formation pressures and prevent influx of formation fluids into the wellbore. Barite (barium sulfate) is the most common weight material, with a specific gravity of 4.2 to 4.5.
