Weighting material

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004133

A high-density solid, typically in powdered form, added to drilling mud to increase its specific gravity. This process increases the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the mud column, which is necessary to control formation pressures and maintain wellbore stability. Barite, with a specific gravity of 4.2, is the most widely used weighting material in the oil and gas industry.
