Weighting agent
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004132
A finely divided solid substance introduced into a drilling fluid to increase its density. This increase in density provides hydrostatic pressure in the wellbore, which counteracts the pressure exerted by formation fluids and prevents blowouts. Common weighting agents include barite, hematite, and calcium carbonate, chosen for their specific gravity and inertness.
