Bridging agent

A solid material added to drilling fluids to plug pores and fractures in the formation, thereby preventing fluid loss into permeable zones. These agents are typically sized to create a filter cake that seals off the formation. Common bridging agents include calcium carbonate, cellulose fibers, and gilsonite.
