Weighted mud
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004131
A drilling fluid that has had its density increased by the addition of high-specific-gravity solids, such as barite or hematite. This increased density is necessary to counterbalance formation pressures and prevent uncontrolled influxes of formation fluids into the wellbore. The mud weight is carefully controlled to avoid fracturing the formation.
